Pass rates to shoot up significantly by 2015, says Kawambwa

The government is expecting to increase pass rates from 60 to 80 per cent by 2015 as a strategy of development in the education sector and the country in general.

Education Minister Dr Shukuru Kawambwa made that assertion in an interview, saying that the government plans to reach that percentage through the program of Big Results Now (BRN) whereby significant efforts have been made to increase accessibility of education to all people in the society.
Dr Kawambwa said in order to implement the plans the government is determined to find ways to raise the quality of basic education, and has set a target of improving the pass rates in both primary and secondary schools from 60 per cent in 2013, to 80 per cent in 2015.
“Once teachers are motivated they will teach students more effectively compared to the present, so they will perform their tasks effectively. If a pupil has an exercise book, sitting on a desk and has a good studying environment it will enable him to study hard,” he asserted.
“Government through its BRN program plans to improve the quality of schools from the primary level to secondary level, improve Tanzania teachers by motivating them, supporting loans when needed, the provision of subsidies in running schools, provision of books and exercise books ,” the minister stated.
Furthermore, BRN addresses lack of accountability, poor availability of teaching and learning materials, inadequate support for struggling students and poor school management which lead to poor performance of students from primary level to secondary level.
The quality transformation programme is supposed to create performance transparency, motivate teachers through incentives, provide support where it needed most and improve the teachers’ working conditions, he added.
